Do you find yourself constantly complaining about the lack of space in your room? Think again! A small-sized room may be more of a convenience than you deem it to be. That’s because small rooms are easier to decorate, easier to organize as well, and easier to keep clean. And the best part is you don’t even need a big budget to do all of that.

#1. Open the Way
When your furniture and accessories block the view into the room, it is bound to look cramped. By moving your furniture away from walkways you’d be opening up space thereby making it appear larger.
You could also use short-length furniture pieces like a low table or an armless open chair and place tall pieces along a wall rather than in the middle. The trick to remember is, if you can see the floor, your room will look bigger.
#2. Display Large-Scale Art
If you wish to hang wall decor in a small room, it is better to go for one large piece of art instead of making a gallery of smaller items. But if you’re fond of creating gallery walls, then limit it to one side (wall). You could place large-scale art on the other sides; even better to leave them blank. This would prevent your room from feeling all cluttered.
#3. Coordinate Furniture And Wall Colors
Contrast colors tend to break up space making it appear much smaller than it actually is. If the color of furniture pieces matches that of the walls, the two blend in effortlessly thereby giving the illusion of a large room.
#4. Emphasize the Vertical & Horizontal
Whether it is a hanging bulb or a tall shelf, employing one element that emphasizes the vertical space in your room would increase the feeling of openness. Similarly, a wall with horizontal lines would emphasize the vastness of the room. Anything that creates a sense of movement and makes your eye travel in an orderly fashion would make your room look bigger.
#5. Use Breezy Fabrics and Keep Your Room Well-lit
When using fabrics for curtains, sofas, or other things, try to avoid heavy materials. This is because they tend to absorb light and make your room feel congested. Go for lightweight fabrics such as linen as they’ll help boost the room’s airiness. Also, curtains with lighter fabrics are easier to pull to the sides allowing natural light to come in.
It’s important to keep your room well-lit, whether that’s via artificial lights or natural light. Lighting contributes significantly to making a room look spacious.
#6. Utilize Lucite & Glass
Using transparent materials creates the illusion of things being farther away. Take the example of a tiny bathroom. If you replace an opaque shower enclosure with a frameless and transparent one, your bathroom will look much bigger. That's because now you are able to see through the shower to the wall. It may be a small distance but the effect it’ll have on the look would be dramatic.
Similarly, you could use lucite or glass tops for tables that have a sturdy base of metal, wood, or stone. By doing so you’d open up the view and make the place look more vast.
#7. Put on Mirrors
The topic of making small spaces appear larger is incomplete without the mention of mirrors. They can be used to reflect light as well as views. The reflecting properties of mirrors trick the eyes into perceiving that there is space/area beyond.
#8. Keep It Simple
This rule applies to everything that you do with your room. The fewer the pieces and patterns in your room, the less cluttered it will feel. So don’t have too many knick-knacks, and even if you do, try to group them. If you are going for a wallpaper accent wall, keep the rest of the room plain; and if you’re hanging a huge oil painting, have it as the only art piece in the room.
The bottom line is you need to be intentional about everything you do with your room; that includes the color schemes, the paintings, the furniture, the electronics, and more.
